Team Thompson gets Mayoral cash boost

29th July 2025

Rochdale Councillor Shakil Ahmed, Mayor of Rochdale for 2024/25, has donated £3,500 to Rochdale AFC Community Trust in aid of the Team Thompson Against Cancer appeal, in a heartfelt demonstration of community spirit and compassion.

Working with Rochdale AFC Community Trust, the mayor and mayoress along with an appointed fundraising committee, organised a series of events and initiatives throughout his term, raising both funds and awareness for a variety of local charities.

“This is more than just a fundraising effort—it’s about standing together as a community and showing the Thompson family, and others facing similar battles, that they’re not alone,” said outgoing mayor Cllr Shakil Ahmed. “I’ve been truly humbled by the generosity of local residents, businesses, and community groups. I want to thank Rochdale AFC Community Trust for their incredible partnership and support throughout the campaign.”

The Team Thompson appeal was set up to support the Thompson family as they navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, with all funds going directly toward care, treatment support, and wellbeing initiatives. There are now plans for a ‘Joey T Foundation’, and this is where these funds will be directed.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chantelle Thompson said:
“We are overwhelmed by the support we’ve received. The kindness shown by the mayor, Rochdale AFC Community Trust, and everyone who donated means more than words can express. This money will help us establish a foundation in Joe’s name, but more than that—it’s given us hope and strength. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Ryan Bradley, Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust, added:
“This is what football and community are all about—coming together in times of need. We were proud to support the mayor’s efforts and are grateful to everyone who got involved. The Thomspon family have some fantastic plans to continue Joe’s legacy and this funding will go towards that .”
