WEEK OF ACTION: Traineeships

18th January 2023

As part of the EFL Week of Action, we are highlighting the positive impact that football clubs and their community trusts have on their local communities.

One of the key areas of work for the Rochdale AFC Community Trust is our Education and Employability programmes. Whilst delivering a Further Education Programme in conjunction with LFE, Alternative Provision for our Partner Schools and an upcoming University programme with University of South Wales, today we are focusing on our Traineeship programme and how it improves the prospects of people in Rochdale.

Traineeships are a vital tool in helping young people and adults in Rochdale to develop the skills and experience they need to secure employment. The programme offers a combination of work experience, training, and support to help participants develop the confidence, skills, and qualifications they need to succeed in the workplace. We work in partnership with Northern Training Academy, who support our delivery and certification of learners on programme.

Our traineeships have been particularly successful in helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain the skills and experience they need to secure employment. In fact, over the past year, more than 80% of participants in our traineeships have gone on to secure employment or further education opportunities.

Those participants include Blaine, who was recently crowned Young Sports Achiever of the Year at the Rochdale Borough Sports Awards, such is the impact the programme has had on not only his job prospects but his life in general. You can see more about Blaine’s journey here:

We have also recently seen two trainees’ take up positions as Apprentice Grounds persons with Rochdale AFC. Liam, who completed a traineeship in the summer, has impressed the grounds team with his hard work and dedication and was recently on hand to welcome the latest cohort of trainees to the Crown Oil Arena and share his journey.

The success of our traineeships is due to the dedicated team of professionals who work within the Education and Employability at Rochdale AFC Community Trust. They work closely with local employers to identify the skills and qualifications that are in demand and tailor the traineeships to meet those needs. They also provide ongoing support and mentoring to participants, helping them to overcome any barriers to employment and to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

In summary, Rochdale AFC Community Trust plays a vital role in helping young people in Rochdale to develop the skills and experience they need to secure employment. Traineeships are one of the key tools we use to achieve this goal, and we are proud of the success that we have had in helping young people to gain the skills, qualifications, and confidence they need to succeed in the workplace.
