HeadStart participants thrive as they take the next big step

26th October 2026

Starting high school can feel like a huge leap, but for the young people taking part in the HeadStart programme, the past half-term has been all about embracing change, building confidence, and discovering just how much they can achieve.

Following a fun-filled summer programme, 26 HeadStart participants have successfully transitioned into eight local high schools. Throughout this important journey, they have been supported every step of the way through weekly one-to-one sessions with the Mental Health Transformation Officer, helping them navigate new environments, routines, and challenges.

The results have been incredibly encouraging.

Participants have shared stories of forming meaningful new friendships, settling into school life, and growing in confidence. Many have increased their school attendance, while others have been recognised for their achievements with awards and positive acknowledgements from staff.

The opportunities haven’t stopped in the classroom either. HeadStart participants have been getting involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities, from drama and computing clubs to football and handball teams. By stepping outside of their comfort zones and trying something new, many young people have found new passions and built valuable connections with their peers.

The impact of the programme can also be seen in the latest feedback from participants:

  • 96% reported an increase in their knowledge and understanding of mental health.
  • 93% reported feeling less nervous about attending high school.
  • 89% reported taking part in sport and physical activity on more days each week.

These figures highlight not only the success of the transition into high school, but also the positive impact HeadStart is having on young people’s wellbeing, confidence, and resilience.

As the programme enters its final half-term, there is plenty to look forward to. With confidence continuing to grow and new opportunities on the horizon, we can’t wait to celebrate even more successes, achievements, and personal milestones with our HeadStart participants in the months ahead.
